Description

Is it the backwoods of the Old South, or the forests of southern Germany? Tiny Helen, Georgia, a struggling lumber town, made a choice in 1969 that made a difference. In a bold stroke of marketing genius, the town turned itself into a Bavarian fantasy world. Humdrum storefronts were transformed into "quaint" shops. Everyday merchants became "Old World burghers." Overnight, the town's rustic facade was trimmed out in the red roofs and curlicues of an Alpine village. German food and German merchandise were imported to make the transformation complete. Whether your interest is in all things Tyrolean, or in studying successful small-town marketing technique, a trip to Helen, two hours' drive northeast of Atlanta, makes for a delightful day out when you need to get away from the urban whirl.
